How to Handle a Radical Career Shake-Up
How to Handle a Radical Career Shake-Up Have you ever faceda challenging work-related situation? I think we all have. Maybe you got laid off, or maybe you made a mistake that cost you your job. Whatever the situation, when we facesuch challenges, our first reaction is typically negative. Wecan quickly become overwhelmed byfear, shame, or worry. But those initial emotions arent alwayswarranted. As the brilliant leader and CEO Tom Darden once said to me, No matter what happens, our initial emotions are almost always wrong. Its so true When something badeanstalt happens or even something good we jump to conclusions. When something bad happens at work, we jump to the conclusion that our life is over or well never work again. How toHandle a Career Shake-UpOver the course of your career, things may happen that shake you to your core. You may lose a job, lose a key kollektiv member, miss out on a raise or a promotion, or not get accepted into an educational p rogram or school.Situations like these are life-changing and initially might seem bad. So, how do you shift your perspective and learn that, sometimes, a bad thing is actually a good thing? Here are a few steps to take when youre facing a core-shaking career situation and feeling lost, scared, or overwhelmed1. Catch Your BreathWhen one of these core-changing career scenarios happens, it is easy to become overwhelmed with emotion. Your head mightspin in every direction as you mentally play out a string of worst-case scenarios. That is why its important to pause, take a deep breath, and gain some perspective. If youre dealing with a work-related crisis, take an emotional timeout. Go for a walk or practice deep breathing. Once youve calmed down, ask yourself, What can I learn from this? Is it possible that this situation, which seems bad right now, is actually a good thing? For example, losing a key person on your team would be hard, but it would also give you a chance to evaluate your bu siness, figure out why that person left, and set yourself up for success with a new person.Or say you got passed over for a big promotion or raise. That hurts, but it can also open up the door to conversations with your leadership team about where you can improve. Similarly, if you didnt get into that prestigious program, it could send you on a totally different education track thats ultimately a better fit for your goals. The point is, theres a silver lining in every situation. You just need to have the faith to find it. 2. Seek Outside CounselWhen youre dealing with an overwhelming work situation, it can be easy to get caught up in your own head. Thats why it is so important to reach out and get other peoples perspectives.Because the situation is so personal to you, youre at risk of blowing it out of proportion. By talking to other people and hearing their views, you can gain some perspective and realize that whatever is going on at your job isnt as bad as it seems. 3. Get Your Att itude in CheckSuccess in life largely depends on your attitude. Successful people have what is called an internal locus of control. This means they realize they are in the drivers seat of their lives and have the ability to control their thoughts, emotions, and outlooks. This, in turn, affects their circumstances and how they interact with the world.People who typically struggle have an external locus of control. They adopt a victim mentality. Instead of feeling in charge of their own lives, they feel that things just happen to them and they have little to no control. How you approach life from a place of power or a place of victimhood is one of the most important contributors to your success. If you can approach whatever is happening in your career from a place of control, you can find the silver lining and use it as a catalyst for positive growth and change. Its never easy when seemingly negative things happen at work, but the thing that seems like a setback today might be the best thing that ever happened to your career. Dont waste these opportunities. You are in your powerful and creative sweet spot. You have clarity and the motivation to take action, whereas otherwise you might have been too comfortable to notice and too complacent to act. This is your time your chance so seize the momentRobert Dickie is the author of Love Your Work 4 Practical Ways You Can Pivot to Your Best Career. How to Target Talent Efficiently with Customized Email
How to Target Talent Efficiently with Customized schmelzglasHow to Target Talent Efficiently with Customized EmailHow to Target Talent Efficiently with Customized EmailByJohn Rossheim Whether or not high-demand professionals are actively job searching, theyre reachable in many ways, including schmelzglas if you can cut through inbox clutter.Companies that create a custom recruiting campaign with a sequence of targeted emails are gaining an edge in the ever escalating competition to recruit top talent. Heres how to target talent as part of your staffing outreachAs talent gets tighter, technology matters mora. The more robust economy of the mid-2010s has added a degree of difficulty to the numbers game that recruiters must play. Were now in a market where it feels like there are lots fewer qualified candidates than open positions, says Andy Fercu, Product Manager, Talent kundenpflege. Part of the solution is technology that eases the matching process for both talent and recruiters. For recruiting efficiency, targeted email campaigns. Email remains a powerful tool for push communications to qualified candidates, most of whom already have good jobs. Email recruitment campaigns are the fastest way to get the message from one to many, says Darren McDougal, managing director at Next Level Marketing Communications, which specializes in the recruitment industry. We see multiple purposes for our email campaigns, including recruitment branding, attracting candidates and helping employers win over the best and brightest.Tools should analyze both qualifications and candidate interest. To reach likely candidates efficiently, email recruiting solutions must integrate capabilities. There are tools that help recruiters find people who are qualified, and there are tools to gather those who are interested, but not much to accomplish both, which is what Talent CRM aims to do, says Fercu. The craft of the click-worthy pitch. The wording of a recruiting message matters as much as the te chnology that conveys it.With a tool to report click rates, you can find out how a particular message is resonating with candidates, says Fercu. The industry average is a 2 or 3 percent click rate, but recruiters with the best subject lines and messages reach 25 percent. Knowing how to write a successful email campaignmake a huge difference.Customized follow-up keeps candidates on the hook. As inbox clutter only worsens, well-timed, helpful follow-up emails become even more important. You can create a campaign in five minutes and the system goes out and does the rest, says Fercu. It messages people and can add more people to the distribution list each day. Then you can indicate your preferences for follow-ups cued to whether a person has shown interest or not. Once youve created the campaign, a candidate can reply to the message, or call, or click a link to apply for the job.Sustained, intelligent candidate contact. With drip marketing, its important to use advanced techniques such a s logic, branching and business intelligence to maximize the effectiveness of a campaign, according to McDougal. We look at how many people open the message and who actually applies for the job. We do heat mapping for where in the country the message is the most effective, and we do lead scoring.Email data enables recruiters to prioritize. A sophisticated email campaign also helps recruiters organize their workflow more efficiently. We track page clicks per user, so recruiters can prioritize the people who have looked at the most pages on a career site, says McDougal.Having prioritized and automated upstream prospecting, recruiters find more time for one-to-one time with hot candidates, whether its by engaging them in phone interviewsor face to face interviews.Email campaigns can keep drive lots of traffic with little effort. One-to-many communications are also an effective means of keeping the talent pipeline well-populated.Its a great idea to use a campaign as a gateway for candida tes to go over to the application tracking system and learn more, says Paul MacGillivray, a client trainer at Monster.Custom email campaigns are good for driving candidates to a companys career site and for building your pipeline, say by driving talent to your companys talent communities.Yes, email still matters. In this age of 24/7 texting and social media, some recruiters might wonder whether email still has the power to capture candidates, especially Millennials. Fear not an email can still carry weight if it is well-aimed, well-timed and well-crafted.Email is at least as important as it was five years ago, says McDougal.Email is still important professionally, even to the youngest workers, says Fercu. Our own interns told us that its creepy to receive a text from an unknown recruiter.Proactively connect with top talent via direct messaging withTalent CRM

5 smart ways to protect your job from the coming robot invasion
5 smart ways to protect your job from the coming robot invasion5 smart ways to protect your job from the coming robot invasionRobots taking over the world might sound like the plot of a sci-fi movie, but its actually much closer to reality than you realize. In fact, brilliant billionaire Elon Musk said this week that artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to menschlich civilization over the next few years. (Musk already believes we are living in a version of history thats a computer simulationrun by scientists.)With each passing year, more and more people are being pushed out of their jobs by smart machines and software programs. One of the most popular robots around is the Knightscope K5, which replaces police officers in patrolling buildings. Bankers and lawyers will be routinely fired and replaced by algorithms. In fact, by 2030, over 38 percent of jobs in the United States could be automated. The future is now, people, and it doesnt look like it needs many humans to thrive. Just consider the fast food industry. One robot created by Momentum Machines can multitask so well it can make a perfect McDonalds burger in just 10 seconds- thereby replacing the need for a whole meal-building crew. Knowing that, its not totally outlandish to assume a robot will be taking your buchen and serving your food when you go out to a restaurant in 15 years. Woody Allen was definitely onto something in Sleeper. The jobs imminently in danger of being replaced by machines are in service, data input, and manufacturing fields, because theyre the most mechanical, and thus easiest to teach a robot or a software program. Jobs that require more creative thinking are less likely to be replaced anytime soon, but that definitely doesnt mean theyll be safe forever. If all this has totally freaked you out, dont start manically applying to jobs just yet. There are several precautionary steps you can take right now to better protect yourself and your job from the robot invasion.Kno w where your job stands on the list of turning roboticIt may be scary, but the best thing you can do first is find out just how much your current job is at risk of being automated. Thankfully theres this handy online tool aptly named Will Robots Take My Job that can calculated the risk percentage for you (there go those robots being smarter than us again). So for example, if youre a cashier, youll learn that theres a 97 percent perspektive a robot will replace you. But if youre an environmental scientist, you only have a 3.3 percent chance of being replaced.Make yourself invaluableIf you can work on strengthening your job skills and going above and beyond in every task handed to you, itll be much harder for upper management to justify replacing you. You may even want to take a few classes to strengthen your various skillsets. Showing you have a vested interest in being the best you can possibly be at your job will no doubt give you a leg up on employees that are content just doing s atisfactory work. Taking classes may also expose you to innovations in your field, which could in turn help you expand the aspects of your job so its less susceptible to robot takeover. Look into related careers that require humansSay youre a reporter who mainly does sports game recaps. You have a high risk of being replaced by a variety of news-writing bots. But what if you slightly pivoted your writing career so that youre a sports reviewer or commentator rather than just an information regurgitator? If you build off of the skills you already have, and utilize them to move across your field into a position that requires more creative thinking, youll be less replaceable. Position yourself well to serve our robot overlordsIf the robots are coming for your job no matter what, get one step ahead of them by learning how theyll fit into your business, then become the liaison who streamlines that process. Having a robotic presence in the workplace can be jarring, so you could be the huma n translator who helps other employees and clients work effectively with it. Learn to be okay with the fact that robots may be doing part of your job in the futureSome jobs may never be entirely automated. For example, people working in HR departments do a lot of data entry, but theres also a huge amount of human interaction thats involved, which requires emotional intelligence. Thats something robots simply dont possess (yet). Beyond that, if robots are doing all the application reading and filing, it leaves a lot more time for HR managers to bolster new relationships with burgeoning businesses and prospective employees. Robots may take over a lot of what humans have been employed to do thusfar, but perhaps that doesnt have to be the worst thing. It will ultimately change the way businesses are run, and likely create new and different jobs that require sentient beings to carry them out. And until the robots of Westworld become realized, those jobs can only go to humans.
